July 4th Crafting and Learning

July 4th is right around the corner. Like it is in a few days. How did we already get to July?? I admit my concept of time has been way off since we have been home since March so maybe that’s why I can’t believe we are in July. Some days it feels like we should be in December and some days it feels like no time has passed at all. Anyone else feel this way?

Anyway, since July 4th is just around the corner, I decided we would start learning a little about July 4th and do some crafting July 4th inspired. So today we went on a walk and talked a little about the 4th of July and then came home and watched 2 pretty good YouTube videos about July 4th. After those videos I found Schoolhouse Rock on YouTube and found the one about the Constitution. We watched and sang that a couple of times. Then we set to work on our first craft!

Today our craft was painting. I got the kids several different shades of red and blue, and a white paint, and got out the construction paper and paint brushes. For the littlest babe I only used washable paints because I knew he would get it everywhere. I wasn’t wrong. He got it all over his hands and then all over the chair. The 2 older kiddos got some washable paints and some regular paints.

I poured the paints on the cheap white paper plates. They are also great for letting the kids make wreaths because you can easily cut out the center! I also had some cheap plastic cups on hand so I put some water in those so the kids could wash their brushes out. I always get the big package of kids’ paint brushes. My kids go through brushes like they are going out of style. They paint often and always manage to destroy them!

After the paints and water cups were ready, I let the kids get to it. I didn’t give them any direction, I just let them do what they wanted. I think they did a great job. After nap they asked to do some more painting for the 4th of July! It has been there favorite thing today!

Tomorrow I’m planning to glue several popsicle sticks together and have the kids paint them like the American Flag! On Thursday I’ll probably use the paper plate wreath idea I mentioned above! I’m not sure what Friday’s activity will be. I’ll try to update with pictures each day! Below are some of my favorite items I get for the kiddos.
